The hot Missouri sun and distant classes leaves students fighting sweat on their way across campus and can make dressing to impress a low priority. Yet, students with unique style continue to show out despite these harsh summer conditions. Take a look at how students of every age turn heads from classrooms to the library.
Sophomore Madelynn Zelade takes heavy inspiration from street fashion, as well as icons such as Kehlani. Her creativity and passion for fashion led to her eye-catching fit that includes a swimsuit for a top, thrifted pants and her beloved Jordans.
“I really like streetwear and I like to dress up some, but I’m not really girly,” Zelade said.
Freshman Teekeo Conley finds inspiration for his outfits from grunge, Y2K and icons such as Steve Lacy or Tyler the Creator. “I usually go for anything that matches my hair colors,” Conley said. Conley’s style is constantly evolving to match the mood of his hair, and he appreciates the aesthetic of a fully coordinated fit from head to toe.
Freshman Cailey Southard sports her own designs inspired by the world around her, promoting sustainable fashion as a textile and apparel management student. “I bought this shirt from some thrift store, and then I upcycled it,” Southard said. Southard learned how to sew in eighth grade as a way to save money on clothes and is currently pursuing a career in fashion.
Senior Ogechi Idika thrifts his favorite items, such as slacks and tees, to minimize spending money on retail clothes. “I’ve always dressed differently,” Idika said. “So I encourage people to explore different things. I’ve been ridiculed. I’ve also been celebrated. So you have to just be confident in who you are.” Idika takes inspiration from his trip abroad to Italy –– the environment, the fashion and how the Italians “move.”
Senior Tessa Feeney doesn’t find that just one style captures her. She takes inspiration from cottagecore, streetwear and feminine fashion. “I definitely feel like [fashion] is a way to express yourself; it’s a first impression,” Feeney said. Goodwill and retro stores are just some of the places Feeney finds her unique pieces.
Sophomore Morgan Louderman is known for her sophisticated style among her friends, having found fashion as an outlet for expression in a big environment. “I’m from a really small town, went to a small school where I fit in, but I felt like I couldn’t be myself,” Louderman said. “But then coming to a big campus at Mizzou, I felt like I could truly express myself.” Louderman is a fan of mixing styles but tends to prefer the “clean girl aesthetic,” making use of minimalism, clean lines and her adored blazers.
These MU fashions continue to impress around campus, and heading into the chillier season it will only get better.
